Life up north, in April. So much beauty around.

Still very much winter, and superb skiing conditions, but along the coast the wildlife is getting restless, and so am I. Neverending twilight and colours to enjoy. We are entering the best period of the year.

Norways coastal cleanup day 2012, Strandryddedagen, May 5.

May 5. is the national Beach Cleanup day in Norway. Last year more than 100 km's of coastline were cleaned, and the litter registered. This year we hope to double the effort. Register your beach at www.ryddenstrand.no . The project is linked to Ocean Conservancy's worldwide Coastal Cleanup Day on the last weekend Sept. All collected litter is registered and becones part of Ocean Conservancys world wide litter statistics.

This posterous poster is mainly driven by the urge to show different aspects of the joy of life in the northern part of Norway. Besides that, I will write about the problem of marine litter and other marine environmental issues. As I live in Tromsø, my posts will primarily show pictures from Tromsø municipality itself, and from Norway's northern counties. Tromsø is a large municipality. Close to 70.000 inhabitants share 2500 sq. km. (That's 2,5 x the land area of Hong Kong ) and most live in the town of Tromsø itself (around 60.000). The backcountry skiing in Tromsø is world class, as are the possibilities for kayaking along the unspoilt and wild coastline. For gentler pleasures, the hiking is great, and there are berries for picking and fish to be caught if the season is right.

Northern Norway is a place of beauty - it is spectacular, wild, rugged and sometimes harsh, but also gentle, lush and colourful. And my town, Tromsø, offers most of what one might need, be it cultural happenings or something as simple and satisfying as perfect freshly baked bread and great coffee, or a beer, after a day spent exploring and enjoying the outdoors.
